In today's episode we talk about emotional maturity, which is understanding that we are the one's responsible for our own feelings. This truth can feel uncomfortable to dive into at first because it rarely feels true in the moment, is often attached to stories we've labeled as true about ourselves or our past, and places the fault of our negative reactions to circumstances at our own feet. Once we let go and allow this truth, however, emotional maturity can offer freedom and empowerment to move forward as the creator of your life experience.
As humans our brain is designed to keep us safe from predators by instilling a fight, flight, or freeze response to any threat. Although this may have been necessary once upon a time for survival, as a species we no longer face the same type of dangers that we once did thousands of years ago. Our brain, however, still responds in the same way towards anything that creates a negative response in our body.
We call this part of the brain our primitive brain and is the part of the brain that calls the shots when we don't choose to use reason or logic to decide our responses to circumstances. This might look like lashing out at someone in an irrational way when you're upset, hiding from everyone when you're feeling down, or shutting down when you feel anxiety. These types of responses are examples of what we call emotional immaturity, and how many of us live our entire lives.
The good news is that we don't have to let the primitive brain call the shots and can use the part of our brain called the prefrontal cortex, which is the part of the brain where logic, reason, and decision making come from. By using the prefrontal cortex, we can understand that our feelings derive from our thoughts and that we have the ability to choose what thoughts we want to have about any circumstance. We can take responsibility for how we feel about absolutely everything!
