We challenges the common interpretation of self-obsession, elegantly reframing intense inner commentary—often mistaken for selfishness or vanity—as an automatic protective response originating in the nervous system. This mental "hum" of worry or comparison emerges when the body registers unease or social threat, prompting the mind to fixate obsessively in an attempt to create control or find a solution to perceived danger. Crucially, this noise is identified as evidence of dysregulation, not a character defect, offering a vital shift away from shame and moral judgment.
