In this episode of Brave Moves, I’m diving deep into one of my favorite phrases — “Be a leader, not a follower.”

Before you roll your eyes and think, “But Julie, I’m not a leader,” hear me out. You are.
You might not run a company or manage a team, but you lead your life — and that makes you your own CEO.

Today, I want to talk about what true leadership really looks like — not the kind that’s about titles, power, or prestige, but the kind that starts with you.

When I first began moving up the ladder in my corporate career, I thought being a leader meant being in charge — telling people what to do, having all the answers, and staying perfectly in control. But what I learned (the hard way) was that leadership isn’t about control — it’s about growth, humility, and self-awareness.

I share the story of a woman I once worked with — a leader with a résumé that intimidated everyone, including me. Her confidence stirred up my insecurities, and I started feeling competitive and inadequate. I found myself reacting, not leading.

That experience taught me that the first person I needed to lead was myself.
I had to learn to regulate my emotions, develop empathy, and stop following fear and comparison.

In this episode, we’ll talk about:

  • Why self-leadership is the foundation for success and confidence
  • How competition and insecurity can become your best teachers
  • Why emotional intelligence is the real marker of great leadership
  • What it means to lead yourself before leading anyone else

Being a leader isn’t about being the loudest in the room. It’s about being the calmest. The most curious. The one willing to grow first.

Brave Move:
Look in the mirror today — not to judge, but to reflect. Ask yourself, Am I leading my life, or am I following fear? Then, choose one way to lead differently this week.
