I was taught that keeping quiet kept the peace until I realized whose peace is it keeping?
After voicing my opinion in a video last week, I received a few comments that read, "I used to like you, but now I need to unfollow." My first reaction was to laugh it off, but as I sat with it, I felt as if I did something wrong. I knew I stood behind what I said in that video, I was proud of myself for voicing how I felt, but I still felt as if I made a mistake by posting it because it upset a few of my followers. This isn't the first time I've felt shame for speaking my mind and truth.
There has been multiple times in my life where I have defended myself, stood up for others, or even just shared an opinion, just to be told that I was starting drama or fueling a fire. I have tried to bite my tongue and stay silent to avoid being called an instigator or drama queen but in doing that, it has also caused me pain.
If you have to sacrifice your voice to keep the peace, it is no longer peaceful.....so let's talk about it.
