The Power of Repair: Healing What's Been Broken

Today's contemplation is about Repair. The Unified Path encourages us to mindfully engage the elements of the Body, Mind, Heart and Soul in our spiritual life. In many cases, this mindful engagement can be seen as a kind of repair.

For example, when we ease up from over-using an element, or devote more attention to an under-used element, we are repairing the optimal balance among them.

The function of repair works in many other ways as well. And the wonderful thing is, it often feels restorative and loving.

Sometimes we are not encouraged to repair. Our perfection-obsessed culture often rewards us for trying to be perfect. To do this, we're asked to hide what is broken, replace what is damaged, or just cover the cracks.

But wisdom traditions tell a different story: Healing is not hiding or erasing the break, it is transforming it.

The Japanese art of Kintsugi repairs shattered pottery with veins of gold, making the broken object more beautiful than it was before. And life works the same way. When relationships are fractured, when trust is broken, when dreams are shattered, we stand at a crossroads. We can discard what hurt us. Or we can repair with gold. Doing repair-work is an act of love. It requires humility, to admit the imperfection. It requires courage, to reopen what we would rather ignore. And it requires faith, to believe that wholeness is still possible, even while confronting the brokenness. Quite often, what is repaired becomes stronger and more precious than it had ever been before.

To repair is to declare that brokenness is not the end of the story. That beauty can rise, not despite the cracks, but because of them.

CHALLENGE:

  • Sometime this week, try to begin repairs on a few things in your household or in your life. It could be a piece of clothing, a relationship with another person, or an under-appreciated element among Body, Mind, Heart and Soul.
