My guest on the program today is Vanessa Frank who is the Events and Development Manager at The Powerhouse Science Center here in Durango, Colorado. The Powerhouse building was built in 1893 as a coal-fired steam generating plant producing AC electricity and was renovated in 2011 as a science center and museum. I speak with Vanessa about the many exciting events and programs happening this summer and throughout the year. Currently the Powerhouse hosts a fundraising event every Wednesday evening from 5:30pm - 8:00pm presenting local musicians with half the proceeds going to non-profits in the area. There are three more events this season featuring the bands, Lala Bones on July 23rd, Yope on July 30 and The Badley Bent on Aug 6th with money being raised for Community Connections, Habitat for Humanity and Know the Snow. The Powerhouse gallery is closed during the day on Wednesdays but open in the evening during the music event and people are free to walk in and enjoy the exhibits. In addition to the music series The Powerhouse hosts a Trivia Nite every Thursday during the summer and every first and third Thursday during the rest of the year. There are summer camps and internships available for students in Durango and satellite camps in Pagosa Springs and Cortez. In addition to her work at the Science Center Vanessa is a poet and performer having received her BFA from Carnegie Mellon University. The annual summer Community Concert Series fundraiser began on June 4th and will continue with three more events through August 6th in it’s second season. Individual tickets are $12.50 if purchased online in advance at powsci.org and $15 if purchased at the door on the day of the event.
