Choosing a career in the military can be highly rewarding. Not only does it bring fulfillment and pride in knowing that you have served your country, but it also provides a great deal of financial advantages. Unfortunately, many veterans and active duty service members fail to maximize these benefits, thus losing out on some perks to their careers and slowing down their financial advancement.

The keys to setting yourself up for success:

  • Reach out to people who are successful in what they're doing and make connections along the way.

  • Treat people the way you'd want to be treated and direct them to the people that you trust.

  • Position yourself to have the opportunity.

In today’s episode of the Expertish Podcast, Jay welcomes Ryan Breznik for the second time and talks about more opportunities offered by the military. Having been presented with the opportunity to further his education, Ryan will share how the military and non-profit organizations provide academic scholarships to active-duty service members, veterans, and their families. He will also discuss how to make the most of your military career financially and from an investment standpoint.

Enjoy!

"Position yourself to have the opportunity. What that means is, look into what's out there, whether it's investing, whether it's a career, whether it's scholarship in my case. But like take the time to look into something and I promise you it'll pay rewards. It'll pay dividends." - Ryan Breznik

"I let myself explore the options that are out there. And I've done that with my career in every position. I've researched what the opportunities were. And instead of just letting fate decide what was going to happen for me, I positioned myself so that I could either screen for a command that was highly sought after or apply for programs that not everyone wants to put the time into applying for." - Ryan Breznik

"Not every situation is going to work out for you. But at least you understand what it is and you can make the decisions instead of letting something pass you by and never realizing that it was even there." - Ryan Breznik

"There are a lot of programs out there in the military that will fund education for your children. You don't have to flip that entire bill. There are other little funds that community members want to give back to veterans. You just need to apply for them." - Ryan Breznik

"Maintain your budget and have a plan for excess funds. If you get a surplus of funding, you're not just going to go out and frivolously spend it." - Ryan Breznik

"If you have money sitting in your checking account or your savings account, it's not growing on its own, you are actually losing money." - Ryan Breznik

"Risk is different for every individual. If you're a single individual without a wife or without a husband, without a family, you're probably willing to take a little bit more risk in the investing sector, whether it's real estate or other types of investment." - Ryan Breznik

"Take smaller risks that still set you up for success and they set your family up for success down the road. Not every risk is do or die." - Ryan Breznik

"If your money is making money for you, you're winning. It doesn't have to be a hundred percent of what you put in. But at least it's not losing to inflation." - Ryan Breznik

"When you're giving information to people, you want to make sure that when they come to you with questions, you have those answers or you can connect them with people that have." - Ryan Breznik
