Decision-making is at the heart of success, whether in business, investing, or everyday life. And one of the best teachers of high-stakes decision-making is found at the poker table. In this episode of Wealth Pathways: The Affluence Science Insights Podcast, host Marie Stella consults management and organizational behavior professor Marvin Karlins about the psychology of gambling and the important life lessons that come with playing poker.

With 33 books and over 150 articles to his name, Dr. Marvin Karlins is not only a professor at the University of South Florida, but also a renowned author and journalist. Additionally, Dr. Marvin Karlins is active in the gaming industry as a poker player and ambassador, having authored poker books and articles. But it doesn’t stop there: Dr. Marvin Karlins is also an international consultant in the aviation industry, serving as head trainer for Singapore Airlines’ operational staff — from pilots and cabin crew, to ground engineers and station managers — for 20 years.

In this episode, Dr. Marvin Karlins highlights the humility, patience, and behavioral skills that are equally pertinent in playing poker and leadership roles. He sheds more light on reading “tells” or non-verbal cues, and how to use them to your advantage — both at the poker table and in the boardroom.

Together, Marie and Dr. Marvin Karlins discuss various habits that may prove useful in high-stakes decision-making, whether it’s risk assessment or learning from losses. So, whether you’re a card shark or a curious beginner, tune in to this episode to discover how the lessons of poker can help you stack the odds in your favor and beyond!
