The concept of burnout is usually linked with career fatigue, but what if you’re feeling emotionally drained in other aspects of your life, like your relationships or day-to-day responsibilities? Emotional burnout is probably something that you’ve experienced but didn’t have the words to describe it. It can feel like chronic stress and anxiety that slowly builds up over time. In today’s episode, I’m joined by therapist, mental health educator, and advocate Divya Robin to discuss what emotional burnout is and how to go about treating and preventing it.

Emotional burnout can look like a lack of motivation or purpose, difficulty concentrating, fixating on negativity, or feeling like your emotions and behaviors are out of control. Because we’re so ingrained in this hustle and urgency culture, there can be a lot of pressure to constantly be performing. Sure, that’s a good quality to have when you’re trying to set goals and grow, but it’s important to set limits and practice self-care.

Divya is all about unlearning toxic productivity and protecting your energy. She shares her tips for gentle ways to set boundaries and talks about the reality of how difficult it can be to do that. We discuss simple ways to add more joy to your day and how to break the cycle of emotional burnout.

Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Amazon Music, or on your favorite podcast platform.

Topics Covered:

  • How emotional burnout develops
  • Triggers to recognize when you’re dealing with emotional burnout
  • Being intentional about understanding other people's emotional reactions
  • Recognizing when a person or situation no longer serves you
  • Overcoming the reflex to immediately respond
  • Working on not jumping to conclusions
  • Setting boundaries with social obligations
