It’s interesting how people in different regions, states, and countries interact with us as lighter-skinned black women. Chris feels perfectly at home in New Orleans, so much so that tourists will take pictures of her assuming she was a local. However, when she visited Nigeria, she was so much lighter than everyone else that she stuck out. Being that different turned out to be dangerous sometimes there.

In Rachael’s experience, living in Hawai’i she looked like she could be a native, but as soon as she started talking that was proven wrong. While visiting Belize, people would come up to her speaking the local language and she’d have to explain that she wasn’t a local. In Mexico, she often would get the local price rather than the hiked-up tourist price at markets!
