Financial fraud is more common—and more personal—than many people realize, especially when it involves aging loved ones and trusted relationships. In this episode, Sara is joined by forensic accountant Kelly Todd, who shares powerful insights from her decades of experience investigating financial misconduct. Together, they explore why fraud is so common among the aging population, what warning signs to look out for, and how to reduce the risk of financial betrayal. From real-life stories to practical tips, Kelly provides a compelling look at the emotional and financial consequences of fraud and what we can do to prevent it. Whether you’re managing a loved one’s finances or simply want to stay vigilant, this episode offers a must-hear perspective on protecting your assets.

About Kelly Todd:

"Financial fraud isn’t just a corporate problem; it’s an ever-present threat that can impact any situation where money changes hands—from businesses and nonprofits to personal financial matters. As a forensic accountant with over 30 years of experience, I’ve seen the destructive ripple effects financial betrayal can have, eroding trust, depleting assets, and leaving a sense of betrayal in its wake. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

My mission is to shift perspectives and equip business leaders, stakeholders, nonprofits, and individuals faced with major financial events like divorce, trust and estate issues, or caring for aging parents with the tools they need to prevent financial betrayal before it strikes. Through decades of experience in untangling complex financial webs, I’ve honed a proactive approach to fraud prevention—teaching others how to recognize the subtle signs of deception, understand the psychology of fraudsters, and take proactive steps to safeguard their financial futures.

In 2023, I embarked on a new chapter, dedicated to raising awareness of the pervasive risks of fraud, rather than simply catching fraudsters after the damage is done. I now focus on empowering clients and audiences with the insights I’ve gathered, delivering practical guidance to raise awareness, help prevent financial misconduct, build a culture of vigilance, and protect what matters most.

Whether you’re navigating the complexities of a corporate or start-up environment, leading a nonprofit, or dealing with high-stakes personal financial matters, fraud awareness is your greatest shield. Join me in the fight against financial deception and take the steps needed to secure a future where fraud is the exception—not the rule."
