We caught up with Robert Fleischman, the original voice that helped launch Journey into rock superstardom, during RockNPod in Nashville — a gathering of icons, stories, and sonic legacies.

Known for his soaring vocals, emotive melodies, and songwriting prowess, Robert Fleischman’s mark on rock history is indelible. Though his time with Journey was brief, his contributions were monumental — co-writing classics like “Wheel in the Sky,” “Anytime,” and “Winds of March,” songs that helped shape the band’s arena-filling sound.

But Fleischman didn’t stop there. His post-Journey career includes a diverse solo catalog, the cult-favorite band Channel, and a hard-hitting stint fronting the sci-fi rock project Vinnie Vincent Invasion, where his voice pushed boundaries and broke molds.

🎤 About Robert Fleischman:

• Born and raised in Los Angeles, California

• Joined Journey in 1977 as lead vocalist, prior to Steve Perry

• Co-wrote iconic tracks on Infinity (1978) and other Journey releases

• Released acclaimed solo albums like Perfect Stranger and World in Your Eyes

• Lead vocalist on Vinnie Vincent Invasion’s self-titled 1986 debut (prior to Mark Slaughter)

• Known for blending melodic sensibility with powerful rock vocals

• Continues to write, record, and explore new artistic territory across genres

• His influence spans generations, from AOR to glam metal to modern melodic rock

Robert Fleischman remains one of rock’s most underrated architects — a man whose voice and pen helped build some of the genre’s most enduring anthems. Sitting down with him at RockNPod was an honor, and a reminder that some legacies speak softly… but echo forever.
