Welcome to Talk Time with Meredith McCarthy – Clinical Hypnotherapist, educator, and founder of the New Zealand Academy of Clinical Hypnotherapy (NZACH).

In today’s episode, we explore the Milton Model – the conversational hypnosis approach inspired by Dr. Milton Erickson that uses artfully vague language patterns to bypass resistance, build rapport, and invite the subconscious mind to create change.

You’ll discover how hypnotherapists can:

  • Use vague and open-ended language to let the client’s subconscious fill in the gaps
  • Build rapport quickly and naturally
  • Bypass conscious resistance with tag questions, presuppositions, and mind reads
  • Use rhythm, pacing, and tone to guide clients into trance without a formal induction
  • Incorporate metaphors and client-specific stories to deepen insight and transformation
  • Encourage ego strengthening so clients see themselves as the source of their own change

We’ll cover practical examples of:

  • Artfully vague statements (“There’s a part of you that knows, doesn’t it?”)
  • Cause-and-effect language
  • Universal quantifiers
  • Nominalisations
  • Embedded commands
  • Pacing and leading

Whether you’re a hypnotherapy student, a practising therapist wanting to refine your skills, or simply curious about how conversational hypnosis works, this talk will give you both insight and practical tools to try.
