In this episode of The Inclusive Dad podcast, host AAron welcomes author, volunteer firefighter, and gym co-owner Mila Maxwell to share her story of growing up with a sister who has cerebral palsy and how that shaped her view of inclusion. Mila discusses the challenges of balancing empathy with guilt, the lessons her sister taught her about gratitude and perspective, and the healing process of writing her debut novel Finding Lady Baltimore. Together, AAron and Mila explore the importance of seeing the human being beyond disability and the power of storytelling to create deeper understanding and connection.

Key Takeaways:

Redefining inclusion – Inclusion is making people feel comfortable in a world not built for everyone.

Sibling dynamics – Growing up with a sibling with a disability often brings love, guilt, and unique responsibilities.

Healing through writing – Fiction provided Mila a safe way to process and heal her experiences.

Universal struggles – Even without disability, every family carries challenges, regrets, and unspoken tensions.

Practical inclusion – Remembering that behind every disability—seen or unseen—is a human being with dignity.

Mila Maxwell’s definition of inclusion:

Inclusion is making everyone feel comfortable in a world that isn't always built for everyone.

Mila Maxwell’s Bio:

Hi, I’m Mila Maxwell, an author, volunteer firefighter, and proud French Acadian from Clare, Nova Scotia. I’ve always had a deep love for storytelling, shaped by my roots, my connection to the outdoors, and my experience growing up with a sister who has disabilities. That part of my life, in particular, has profoundly influenced the themes I explore in my writing, like identity, belonging, guilt, and love within complex family dynamics.

My debut novel, Finding Lady Baltimore, is rooted in my own lived experience, and I’m passionate about using story to spark honest conversations and create space for others and help them feel more understood.
