This French economist saw exactly what we see today - law perverted from protecting rights into legalizing theft. Bastiat nailed the core truth: "The law perverted! The law become the tool of every kind of avarice, instead of being its check!" Government doesn't protect your property - it's the biggest threat to it. Here's Bastiat's formula for human existence: "Existence, faculties, assimilation - in other words, personality, liberty, property - this is man." These three things exist BEFORE government, not because of it. Law should be "the collective organization of the individual right to lawful defense." That's it. You have the right to defend your person, liberty, and property. Government's only legitimate role is organizing that defense collectively. But here's what happened - and Bastiat predicted this perfectly. Politicians discovered they could use law to plunder legally. Instead of stopping theft, they became the thieves. "Legal plunder" - that's taxation, regulation, redistribution - all of it. Bastiat identified two causes of legal plunder: "naked greed and misconceived philanthropy." Politicians either steal directly for themselves, or they steal from you "for your own good." Both are theft with better marketing. The welfare state? Legal plunder. Corporate subsidies? Legal plunder. Public schools? Legal plunder. Every government program violates property rights by taking from some to give to others. Bastiat saw the inevitable result: "The plundered classes will eventually figure out how to enter the political game and plunder their fellow man." Democracy becomes a contest over who gets to steal from whom. Here's the key insight - there are only three possibilities: "When the few plunder the many, when everybody plunders everybody else, or when nobody plunders anybody." We've tried the first two. Time for option three. Bastiat's solution? "Law is organized justice." Nothing more, nothing less. Protect individual rights to life, liberty, and property. Everything else is tyranny dressed up as democracy. The socialists of Bastiat's day sound exactly like today's politicians. They want to "play God" and remake society through force. They treat humans like clay to be molded by the great legislator. But Bastiat understood what we know: "God has implanted in mankind all that is necessary to enable it to accomplish its destinies." We don't need politicians managing our lives. We need them to stop stealing from us. "Away with quacks and organizers! Away with their artificial methods! Reject all systems, and try liberty - liberty, which is an act of faith in God and in His work." Bastiat proved that every government program violates the Non-Aggression Principle. If you can't do it individually without committing a crime, government can't do it collectively either. The Law destroys every statist argument with simple logic. Read it, share it, live it. Because understanding legal plunder is the first step to ending it.
