Jesus enters Jerusalem with deliberate intent, cleanses the temple, curses the fig tree, and responds to the chief priests and elders by condemning them through parables—the story of the two sons and that of the householder whose servants killed his son.
In chapter 21 of Matthew, the narrative intensifies, shifting focus to Jesus's actions and purpose. He adopts a new and unmistakable role. Previously, He entered the city quietly, but now He boldly asserts His claims as King upon the city of the King. His actions are nothing short of daring: He cleanses the temple for the second time—a move of audacious confidence, if He is not truly who He claims to be. In a symbolic gesture, he curses the fig tree and confronts the religious leaders, accusing them of plotting His death through parables.
The method of Jesus in this chapter exudes decisiveness and deliberation. He forces the issue, compelling His opponents to act according to His timing and terms. He remains firmly in control of the unfolding events. His kingly presence is most evident as He advances toward the Cross.
