What happens when a patient in recovery is 'triggered?' This is a very important topic and should be understood by a person in or wanting to achieve recovery but also for those who have contact, or love, someone in this situation. We will discuss what actually 'happens' when someone is met with a 'cue' that results in a trigger, even if a craving doesn't follow. We will explain it from the person who was triggered point of view (with some analogies not substance related) as well as explain the brain chemistry level. The most important thing to remember is that regardless of what causes the trigger or even how far along you are in recovery when triggered, a trigger should not elicit shame because it truly all is 'in your head' (the reptilian brain and NOT the adulting brain!)
