What Did They Sing? What Did They Pray?

“About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them” - Acts 16:25

Paul and Silas had been arrested, stripped, beaten, shackled, and put in the deepest most secure part of the jail. Late into the night they began to sing and pray.

What did they sing? What did they pray? The text gives us no information and no clues. Did they sing the psalm Jesus quoted on the cross asking why God had forsaken him. Did they pray for God to punish their wrongdoers and their families? Did they simply pray for God to rescue them?

We don’t know what they sang and what they prayed. But we can be sure that it was honest, and raw, and real. There was nothing performative or perfunctory about what they were doing that night.

The story does tells that that spirit of God showed up in a mighty way and shook the foundation of the prison itself. It broke the shackles while transforming the hearts, minds, and lives of both the imprisoned and their jailers.

Whatever we sing, whatever we pray, when we seek honest connection with God, God shows up. This changes everything even if nothing changes.

I’m Horace McMillon. This is 60 Seconds of Hope. Peace be with you.
