Running back LJ Martin, who has been stellar in the Cougars’ recent winning streak, must dominate the line of scrimmage. Sustained drives that eat clock are essential to keep the explosive Texas Tech offense, which often wins by massive margins, relegated to the sideline. Quarterback Bear Bachmeier needs time to operate and must convert red-zone opportunities into seven points, not three, a massive adjustment from their first meeting.

Defensively, the Cougars must focus on forcing turnovers and applying consistent pressure. Texas Tech quarterback Behren Morton is pivotal to their success; making him uncomfortable and forcing ill-advised throws is non-negotiable. Finally, an edge in the special teams battle could be the deciding factor. Against a heavily favored opponent, a single play—a blocked kick, a long punt return from a playmaker like Parker Kingston, or exceptional coverage to pin Texas Tech deep—can provide the necessary field position or points to swing momentum. BYU needs to win the hidden yardage war to ensure the offense is not constantly starting drives backed up against their own goal line.
