At the end of a long and tiring day at his practice, Dr. Watson was contemplating the joys of a good night's sleep, while Mary, his wife, was engaged with her needlework. Suddenly, Kate Whitney, a personal friend of the Watsons, stops by for a visit. Kate says "Please excuse my calling so late, but I need a little help. I didn't know what to do. It's about Isa, my husband. He has not been home for two days. I am so frightened for him". Dr. Watson asks "Mrs. Whitney, has your husband returned to his old habit? Has he taken to opium again?" She answers "Yes". Watson says "I feared he would". Kate says "But he tried, Doctor, and I know he tried to keep it from me. Up until now, his usage would be confined to one day. He would come back twitching and shattered in the evening. But now, he's been away for forty eight hours. What am I to do?" Watson asks her "Which den does he make use of?" She says "It's a place near the docks, on Upper Swandam Lane, called Bar of Gold". Watson says "I will go there alone to search for him. If he is at this address, I will send him home in a cab within two hours". Mary says "Please be careful, John". Watson says "Of course, my dear. I shall be as quick as I can". In an alley near Swandam Lane, was a steep flight of steps leading down to what appeared to be the mouth of a black cave, Watson found the den of which he was in search. He opened the door and made his way into the dark room, which was thick and heavy with opium smoke. The room was filled with heavy wooden berths, like that of an immigrant ship. At the end, there was a small brazier burning charcoal, and a tall, thin old man sitting on a stool staring into the fire. Soon, Watson finds Isa Whitney, and tells him "Your wife has been looking for you for two days. You should be ashamed of yourself". Isa says "I am. Find out what I owe, Watson. I can do nothing for myself". Looking for the manager to settle Isa's debts, Watson walked by the tall, thin old man looking into the fire and felt a sudden tug at his coattails.
