Burnt Offerings - Part II
Manage episode 496713212 series 3679897
In this episode we continue our discussion about the burnt offerings placed on the altar in the courtyard. Today we look at the final three offerings: the sin offering, the trespass offering and the peace offering.
Each offering had a different meaning and significance to the people of Israel and to Christians today.
Sin Offering
The sin offering was for the unintentional sin of God’s people. It is a way to transfer sin to the animal to atone for the sin before God.
Leviticus 4:1-12
This offering points to Jesus as the lamb of God and how he sacrificed his life for the sins of the world. Israelites brought different types of animals for the sin offering depending upon their status in life and what they could afford.
Sin is defined by the Bible as transgression of the law. God’s law is the 10 commandments. So whenever the people of Israel broke the law, they needed to bring a sin offering to the sanctuary.
1 John 3:4
This pointed forward to Jesus as the payment for sin. In Matthew 5, Jesus discusses the spirit of the law and how his followers needed to keep it. Paul then links the law and faith to eternal life.
Romans 6:23
The sin offering was a way for God’s people to realize their sinfulness before God and to see by faith beyond the offering to Jesus and how Jesus’ blood alone could atone for our sins.
John 16:8
Genesis 4:7
The offender had to slay the animal. The blood was then taken and placed on the veil in the Holy Place of the Tabernacle. For this offering, the fat and organs were removed (unlike the whole burnt offering) and the priest ate a portion of the flesh. Fat represented sin and the meat, hide and entrails were burned outside the camp as a symbol of taking the sin away.
Hebrews 13:12
The whole purpose of this offering was to atone for sin.
2 Chronicles 29:23-24
Ezekiel 16:63
Psalm 51:7
2 Corinthians 5:21
Isaiah 53:10
Daniel 9:24
It was a dynamic picture of our relationship Christ and what he did to atone for our sins.
Hebrews 10:20
