In Memory of the Hart children
They were the “Hart Tribe”, two white mothers and their six adopted Black children, the picture of love and progress plastered across social media. Smiling photos, vegan meals, road trips, and that viral image of Devonte Hart hugging a police officer at a protest. The world called them inspiring. But behind closed doors, the Hart family was starving, isolated, and terrified.
In March 2018, Jennifer Hart drove the family SUV off a 100-foot cliff on the California coast, killing herself, her wife Sarah, and their six children. What looked like a tragic accident turned out to be premeditated murder.
This episode digs into how years of abuse went unnoticed, or ignored, by Child Protective Services, and how society’s obsession with the “perfect family” blinded everyone to the horror beneath the filter. You’ll hear about the warning signs, the neighbor’s desperate calls for help, and the haunting story of the children’s birth mother, Tammy Scheurich, who lost her kids to the system only to see them die in the name of someone else’s redemption.
This isn’t just a story about one family’s darkness. It’s about the dangerous ways we romanticize “saviors,” the systemic failures that let children slip through the cracks, and the illusion of love on social media.
