Which road are you walking? The question pierces straight to the heart as we explore Jesus' profound teaching from Matthew 7:13-14 about the two paths that stretch before every human soul.
Most people—even many who consider themselves religious—are traveling the broad, comfortable road. It's well-lit, smooth, and packed with fellow travelers who profess belief in God or even Jesus. But as Christ himself warns with stark clarity, this popular highway leads not to heaven but to destruction. The road is lined with self-deception, with those who've embraced the dangerous illusion of salvation without surrender.
The narrow way, by contrast, is difficult to find and challenging to walk. Jesus doesn't use gentle language to describe this path—He tells us to "strive," to "agonize," to "wrestle" our way through this gate. This isn't about earning salvation but about the reality that genuine faith always manifests in transformed living. The narrow way demands daily cross-bearing, dying to self, and bringing every thought into captivity under Christ's lordship. It's marked not by perfection but by persistent obedience.
The most alarming aspect of Christ's teaching is the repeated emphasis on numbers: "many" travel the broad path to destruction, while only a "few" find the way to life. This should shock us into serious self-examination. Are we truly converted or merely making a religious confession? Has our belief led to regeneration—a complete transformation of who we are? We cannot simultaneously walk two opposing paths or serve two masters. The choice before us is binary, with eternal consequences hanging in the balance. The gate remains open today, but it will not stay open forever. Which road will you choose?
