Are You Chasing Something? By Tam L.

A wise woman once told me, “Anything that’s running away from you is not for you.” That statement hit differently the more life happened to me. It’s easy to romanticize the chase—whether it’s money, love, career success, or validation. But let’s pause for a second: How many of us are out here chasing something that’s clearly running away?

Think about that.

We run full speed toward things we believe will make us whole. But sometimes, we’re sprinting in the wrong direction—toward illusions, not answers. It’s easy to get caught up in the image of the life we want: the corner office, the perfect relationship, the big house, the applause. But rarely do we stop to ask ourselves: Why do I want this? Who told me I needed this to be enough?

Recently, I experienced a deeply painful moment that shook me to my core. In the aftermath, I did something I hadn’t done in a while—I sat with myself. Not the curated version of me that shows up for others, but the real me. I had an unapologetic self-talk. I peeled back layers of assumptions and delusions and asked hard questions.

And what I found was this: I had been chasing a figment of my imagination—an illusion crafted by fear, insecurity, and a desperate need to feel "arrived." I had bought into untruths that told me if I just got the job, or the relationship, or the recognition, I’d be complete. But the truth is, none of those things could patch what I hadn’t yet confronted in myself.

So I started asking different questions:

  • Do I really need that career—or do I just want the identity it gives me?
  • Do I truly know the people I long to be in relationship with?
  • Do they even have the same desire or capacity to know me?

It’s in those raw, honest moments that your life begins to shift. Because knowing that the decisions you make today will determine your tomorrow isn’t just a pretty quote—it’s truth.

Let me be clear: I’ve learned this the hard way. I’ve chased what wasn’t for me. I’ve invested in what couldn’t pour back. I’ve given energy to things that only drained me. And it left me asking why I ever thought the chase would end in fulfillment.

Now, I protect my peace like it’s sacred—because it is. I examine situations and people not based on what they present, but on whether they are assets to my purpose or liabilities to my growth. I lean into discernment, not desperation. And I allow God to show me the truth about people, even when it hurts—because it’s better to know than to stay blind.

I don’t know what makes us want what we don’t need. Maybe it’s conditioning. Maybe it’s loneliness. Maybe it’s ego. But I do know this: We are uniquely designed to recognize when something doesn’t want us. And if it doesn’t want you, you don’t need it.

Let that sink in.

So the next time you find yourself chasing—pause. Look at what you’re running after. Ask yourself if it’s truly m
