Jan and Wes have successfully replaced the much maligned capacitive touch steering wheel controls on our ID.4s with REAL MECHANICAL BUTTONS! Here is the discussion on VWIDTalk: https://www.vwidtalk.com/threads/i-have-real-steering-wheel-buttons.18466/ This requires the buttons, trim, and an airbag removal tool, and some care. The buttons need a small modification in order to work. Please post in the comments if you know of newer mechanical buttons that fit, but use CAN to communicate like our current capacitive buttons.
