In an exclusive Vlad TV interview, former San Quentin correctional officer Darren Monahan shared gripping insights from his early days guarding some of the prison’s most infamous inmates, including Charles Manson, Stanley “Tookie” Williams, and Richard “The Night Stalker” Ramirez. Growing up in the Bay Area, Monahan initially considered becoming a police officer but was drawn into corrections after encountering a San Quentin recruitment booth in 1986. At 21, he entered what he describes as "the worst prison in America" at the time, stepping into a world where he was the youngest of 1,200 staff members and faced the daunting challenge of navigating daily life amid the nation’s most dangerous criminals.
