Hurricane Katrina was the first time in modern history when the press was unable to impose a united narrative on events. Liberals and conservatives could choose their own adventure when it came to news coverage, alternately seeing the disaster as racist malice from the White House or black incompetence in New Orleans. The unbridgeable divide centered on race. And while liberals still enjoyed media hegemony at that time, Katrina ultimately paved the way for the collapse of the fake news media and the rise of Donald Trump.
