Manage episode 483102790 series 3642764
In this impactful episode of the VET S.O.S. Veteran Educational Resources Spotlight, we’re honored to host Dr. Mike Barany, U.S. Army veteran and Director of the Military and Veteran Success Center at Stockton University. Dr. Barany shares his powerful journey from serving as a Cavalry Scout in Iraq to becoming a national leader in veteran student support and educational innovation.
We dive deep into Stockton’s groundbreaking Troy to Ithica Class, a veteran-exclusive course that blends ancient literature with modern military experiences. Through classic texts like the Iliad and Odyssey, and modern works like Achilles in Vietnam and Odysseus in America, the course explores themes of moral injury, trauma, transition, and identity. The class culminates in a 10-day academic trip to Greece—offering student veterans a transformative and immersive learning experience unlike any other.
Dr. Barany also details how Stockton uses VA work-study students to create a supportive, peer-driven environment while ensuring its Military and Veteran Success Center remains active, inclusive, and effective.
Whether you're a veteran, educator, or transition support advocate, this episode offers insight into how higher education can—and should—support our nation’s heroes beyond the classroom.
