Following a BA in Journalism and an Air Force career, he pursued a graduate degree in English Literature at Western Michigan University. Heywood is a former adjunct professor of professional writing at Western Michigan University. Author, cartoonist, painter, poet, photographer, fisherman, hiker, Heywood spends up to a month a year in trucks on patrol with Michigan conservation officers to gather information for the Woods Cop mystery series. He has worked in 15 counties in the Upper Peninsula with them under all kinds of conditions during all times of the day. All of the hiking he does alone is to prepare himself for the outings he does with the conservation officers. The experience helps make the stories authentic. Almost everything in the series has happened to a CO somewhere in the state.
