He also desired to see his young country—the Confederate States of America—honor the Lord by obeying the Sabbath. Along with most Protestants in nineteenth-century America, Jackson saw no issue in petitioning the U.S. government (nor the general government of the Confederacy) to honor the Sabbath in civil life.
