Listen Like Thieves Turns 40: INXS Look Back on Their Breakthrough Album
Manage episode 481353995 series 3351574
INXS legends Jon Farriss and Kirk Pengilly join Gleeso on Triple M Nights to celebrate 40 years of Listen Like Thieves, the album that catapulted the Aussie rock icons to global stardom.
First released in 1985, Listen Like Thieves marked the beginning of INXS’ game-changing collaboration with producer Chris Thomas — the man determined to bottle the band’s raw, live energy in a studio setting. “He was fascinated by how powerful we were live, and how we hadn’t captured that yet on record,” explains Kirk Pengilly. The result was a sonic turning point that redefined their sound and laid the groundwork for their future success with albums like Kick and X.
Jon and Kirk also reflect on the 40th anniversary reissue, which has been meticulously remixed by Giles Martin — son of legendary Beatles producer George Martin — bringing new depth and clarity to the classic album.
In a poignant moment, the boys open up about revisiting rare tapes and old recordings of their late bandmate Michael Hutchence, sharing the emotion and nostalgia of hearing his iconic voice again.
