Episode #023 - Peter Clarke - 7/7, Litvinenko, and the Future of Terrorism Threat

Peter Clarke joined the Metropolitan Police in 1977. His senior posts included Commander of the Brixton Division, Head of the Royalty and Diplomatic Protection Department, Head of the Anti-Terrorist Branch and in 2006 the first head of the newly formed Counter-Terrorism Command (SO15). From 2009 – 2013 he was a non-executive director of the Serious Organised Crime Agency and from 2013 -2016 a member of the Board of the Charity Commission. In 2014 he was appointed as Education Commissioner for Birmingham to investigate the Islamist infiltration of school governing bodies (the Trojan Horse Enquiry). From 2016, for a period of nearly 5 years, he was HM Chief Inspector of Prisons.

In this episode, we explore Peter’s role in leading the investigation into the 7/7 bombings against London’s transport system, his recollections of the manhunt that followed the 21/7 bombings, as well as his own thoughts on the threat posed by hostile foreign states, drawing on his role in the investigation into the 2006 poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko.
