I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Monday morning, the 5th of May, 2025, and this is your friend Angus Buchan, with a thought for today.
We go straight to the Book of Malachi 4:6:
“And he will turn
The hearts of the fathers to the children,
And the hearts of the children to their fathers,…”
A reconciliation produced by repentance, by saying sorry and humbling ourselves. Then we go straight to the Book of Ephesians 6:1 (Amplified Version)
Children, obey your parents in the Lord [that is, accept their guidance and discipline as His representatives], for this is right [for obedience teaches wisdom and self-discipline].”
Children, you’ve got to honour your mom and your dad. You say, “But you've never met my mum and dad. Uncle Angus.” No, I haven’t, but I'm a father myself. You see, the first commandment in the Bible with a promise added to it is Commandment Number 5, which says, “Honour your mother and your father so that your days may be long in the land”. You've got to honour Mum and Dad, for God's sake, if you want a blessing over your life. The hardest place to be a Christian is often in your own home, especially if mom and dad don't want to follow the Lord. You've got to honour them. Then I want to say to dads,
“Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger. Do not exasperate them to the point of resentment with demands that are trivial, small things, or unreasonable or humiliating or abusive, nor show favouritism or indifference to any of them,…”
Ephesians 6:4
You can't have any favourites in the home. You must treat all your children the same way. Don't embarrass them in public. Do you know the peer pressure that your children are going through at the moment is unbelievable? Let home be a safe haven for them, where they can come home and open up their hearts towards you, and tell you about what's happening at school or, in university, or in life. These are very important.
“What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul” (or his family)? Mark 8:36.
I really want to say to you today, work on your home, work on your marriage, work on your relationship with your children. Do you notice that the Lord is speaking here to fathers, not mothers? Gentlemen, you must take up your right responsibility, and children, you've got to respect your mum and dad, and then things will go well in your home.
