UnRest - Ancestors or artefacts?
Manage episode 520982464 series 2915031
Professor Siona O'Connell from the University of Pretoria directed a documentary entitled, UnRest which premiered in Europe focusing on the debate around human remains that were unearthed in 2003 believed to be of slaves and displaced individuals from the 18th and 19th century. The remains were found in Prestwich Street in Green Point, Cape Town and sparked debate between institutional archeologists and local communities who feel that they (remains) should be acknowledged as ancestors and not just scientific artefacts. Professor O'Connell says that the tension exposes how post-apartheid archeology failed to decolonise its epistemological frameworks.
Guest: Professor Siona O’Connell - Professor in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Pretoria and also director of the documentary entitled UnRest
