Financial Planner Luke Smith joined 2CC Talking Canberra in Money Matters, which aired live on Friday 12 December 2025. The topic for this week is one that everyone can learn from as we head towards Christmas. In this episode Luke shares the most common misconceptions about financial matters he’s heard from clients this year. There’s a lot of information out there, but not all of it is good and some of it is from people who aren’t qualified on social media chasing more followers. This podcast aims to separate the facts from the fiction and provide you with the right information to start thinking about your own financial planning journey.

Thank you for joining us live on 2CC, YouTube, Spotify or your favourite podcast streaming service for ‘The Strategy Stacker – Luke Talks Money’.

Key topics covered include:
  • I’ve retired and I can’t add any more to super. So that option closed to me. That’s not correct!
  • Can I start a new pension if I already have one? Yes you can and there might be good reasons to do it.
  • Can I stop a pension once I start it? Yes you can, you could roll it back to super, add more money in and re-start a new pension.
  • If my super balance is over 500k today, I can’t use the catch-up legislation, that means I’m not eligible – not true, 30 June of the previous financial year is the balance they consider.
  • I can only make a contribution of 10% to PSS Super. That’s not correct, you may make a contribution to another super fund and get a tax deduction too.
  • My kids won’t be taxed on my super if I pass away. If they’re adult children, they will.
  • If I don’t want an industry super fund, I have to get a SMSF – no there’s another option, a retail personal super fund.
  • SMSF’s are the most expensive option when it comes to super – with a high account balance they’re actually the cheapest.
  • My Will looks after my superannuation if I pass away. No correct, you’ll need to get a death nomination from your super fund.
  • I need to combine all my super into one fund. No there are reasons to have more than one, depending on your goals which might also include insurance and estate planning.
  • Luke shares his tips to help you navigate financial planning matters.
