In 1647, the urban dispossessed of Naples erupted into a revolutionary class war against their gangster aristocracy. Lead by a 'barefoot Moses', the destitute Masaniello, the brief but impactful revolt led to over a week of chaos that turned power in the Renaissance metropolis on its head, marking "the first time that the proletariat of any European city seized power and governed alone".
