In a chilling series of events over the September 27-28, 2025 weekend, two U.S. Marine veterans allegedly unleashed deadly violence in separate mass attacks, claiming multiple lives and injuring others across two states. In Southport, North Carolina, Iraq War veteran and Purple Heart recipient Christopher Edge, 39, reportedly arrived by boat at the popular Southport Yacht Basin bar and opened fire on patrons, killing three and wounding at least eight in a brazen assault described by local officials as “evil coming ashore” in a community previously untouched by such horror. Just over 12 hours later in Grand Blanc, Michigan, fellow Marine veteran Thomas Jacob Sanford drove his vehicle into a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel before firing on worshippers, escalating the nation’s tally of mass shootings to over 324 this year alone, according to the Gun Violence Archive. As investigations unfold, these back-to-back tragedies highlight the profound struggles faced by some military veterans and the urgent need for enhanced mental health support in the post-service community.
