People know St. Augustine, Florida as a popular tourist destination with fine beaches and Spanish colonial architecture. But 60 years ago, St. Augustine was as segregated as anywhere in the deep South. In our opening episode, local African-Americans challenge the status quo by demanding access to beaches, motels, and restaurants. Ultimately, they call for help from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (the SCLC). In a bold strategic move, King asks that a group of rabbis come South to join the protests.
