This week in The Labia Lounge I got to have an incredible and in-depth conversation with Shael Norris, founding executive director of SafeBAE—the only US national survivor-founded, youth-led organization working to prevent sexual violence among teens.

Shael shares her journey from working in theatre on the iconic Vagina Monologues to three decades of hands-on activism, empowering young people to break cycles of abuse in their schools and communities. She gives us a run down on the birth of SafeBAE, its involvement in creating peer-to-peer resources, and the importance of centering survivors’ experiences in both healing and systemic change.

We explore:

  • Why true consent culture starts before university, and how art and activism can powerfully intersect
  • How rape culture is normalised, and what it really looks like among teenagers
  • The origins and impact of SafeBAE’s acclaimed prevention curriculum and policy toolkits
  • Digital safety: navigating nudes, cyberbullying, and bystander intervention
  • Innovative approaches that seek accountability—not just punishment—for young perpetrators, and support for those harmed
  • The importance of embedding consent education across all subjects, not just health class
  • What’s missing from traditional sex ed, and why pleasure, boundaries, and emotional skills matter
  • Simple, actionable ways parents, teachers, and students alike can shift the culture—starting now with accessible strategies and suggestions

Shael also gets real about the ongoing struggle for funding sexual violence prevention in the US, the global public health crisis of teen sexual assault, and the life-or-death stakes of this work.

Tune in for hard truths, goosebump moments, and a dose of hope. Whether you’re a student, educator, parent or anyone who cares about safer schools and happier lives, this conversation is for you.

Plus you can expect all the usual antics and hilarious, vulnerable n' relatable personal stories and signature segments that you've come to know and love here in The Labia Lounge!

Make sure you're subscribed for more LL action, and it'd absolutely warm my heart and tickle my clit if you'd leave a gushing review or five star rating for the poddy!
