Razumikhin offers to protect Dunya from the man, which she consents to. He suggests that Dunya and her mother stay in St Petersburg and suggests that they all go into the publishing business together. Dunya is thrilled with the idea and Raskolnikov agrees that it is a good idea too. But Raskolnikov suddenly gets up to leave. He has decided that he needs to separate himself from his family and Razumikhin for a while and that they mustn't pursue him. The rest of the group is shocked and Razumikhin follows him out into the hall, but Raskolnikov sends him back. He tells Razumikhin to stay with Pulcheria Alexandrovna and Dunya. The two stare at each other, and Razumikhin realises that Raskolnikov is the murderer.
