The initial disappearance of the file raised immediate concerns about selective disclosure, especially given the DOJ’s repeated assurances that the Epstein release would be comprehensive and politically neutral. By restoring the document only after it was flagged, the department reinforced the perception that the process was reactive rather than transparent, driven more by damage control than a commitment to full disclosure.
