Dr. Warwick Phipps and Marizaan Koen explore why congruence—alignment between what is said and how it is said, both verbally and nonverbally—is essential in therapy and in everyday relationships. They discuss how congruence builds trust, why in-congruence often leads to “double messages,” and how therapists can observe congruence both in the therapeutic relationship and in the client’s broader context.
