Pablo Escobar's criminal activities and subsequent passing have given him a mythical status that his crimes should not have.
During his time as the world's most notorious drug lord, he saw himself as a Robin Hood figure, building facilities such as homes and football pitches in the downtrodden areas of Medellin. It was in the construction of the latter that Escobar's influence went beyond the drug trade.
Initially, there were some benefits, such as the football team he brought winning the Copa Libertadores. Yet quickly his influence became a detriment and ended in tragedy.
I spoke to David Arrowsmith about how far Escobar's hand affected the status of Colombian football, Colombia's efforts in the 1990 and 1994 World Cups, the tragedy that occurred after the latter, and the state of football in the country today.
