Too Much of a Good Thing by Steve Adams
For years, I have heard stories where comments are made about the “the Back 40”, referring to a field on the far end of a farm. Our farm was small by community standards, but it had distinct areas. Hay and pasture fields, a wooded section, and the spring fed creek.
OUR Back 40 was a North facing field of orchard grass and fescue that we would bale each year in early summer. My dad would open the field up with the mower and, after a few rounds, I would walk through the cut sections looking for tiny wild strawberries. They were the BEST! So much sweeter and more flavorful than the large behemoths we see in the stores today.
It was in this context that I learned a very valuable and life-long lesson though. After stuffing my face with as many of those strawberries as I could manage and, given that the day was hot, I learned first hand that Too Much of a Good Thing may not in fact be so GOOD…
