Peter is deeply unhappy and constantly fearful in the Old Pasture, not from traditional predators but from the large, ill-tempered gray rabbit who claims ownership of the territory. This new adversary can follow him everywhere, leaving Peter in perpetual anxiety, unable to eat or sleep properly.

Despite his miserable state and torn coat, Peter stubbornly remains, hoping the old gray rabbit will relent, but instead, he is relentlessly pursued and driven from every potential resting place.

Notable Quotes:

  • "I have no doubt that you've been told How timid folks are sometimes bold." – Peter Rabbit (epigraph)
  • "Persistence, I was taught, will win, And so I will persist." – Peter Rabbit

Summary:

  • The unique challenge presented by this new enemy: another rabbit who can follow Peter anywhere.
  • Peter's sheer persistence, pushing him to the brink of exhaustion and despair.
  • The dramatic introduction of "two soft, gentle eyes," hinting at hope and a new direction for the story.
