From the depths of a fatherless childhood to building a thriving ministry, Pastor Mahumbe's journey offers powerful insights into how our background do not determine our future.
Growing up as the only boy in a home full of women, he matured quickly without a male template to follow. The absence of his father and the early loss of his mother could have become excuses for failure, but instead became the motivation to build something different. "What that did to me," he reflects, "was help me correct certain mistakes that were made." This determination to break negative cycles drives his approach to family and ministry today.
The turning point came when his aunt Rufaro Chirisa introduced him not just to church attendance, but to a personal relationship with Christ. This connection, coupled with mentorship from pastors who invested in him, transformed his path. Through servanthood – cleaning his pastor's car, arriving first and leaving last – he discovered the principles that would elevate him: "Servanthood doesn't only help you go up the ladder, but helps you stay on top."
At Movement Church, this philosophy infuses their unique approach to evangelism through sports. Basketball courts, cycling teams, marathons, and even renovating a community swimming pool have become vehicles for reaching the unchurched. This creative outreach reflects their mission to evangelize rather than "recycle Christians."
Pastor Mahumbe's three foundational principles for success offer wisdom for anyone seeking transformation: do things right by building proper foundations, learn to work with your hands, and surround yourself with people who elevate rather than diminish you. As he puts it, "It doesn't matter where you start in life. The most important thing is finding your faith, working as hard as you can, and finding the right group of people."
