This sermon presents the last part of a series based on the book "The Marketing of Evil," focusing specifically on the “myth of church-state separation.” A detailed examination of the modern interpretation and application of the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause, which prohibits Congress from establishing a national religion or interfering with the free exercise of religion. The original intent of this clause was to prevent the federal government from imposing a national religion or interfering with state-sponsored religions, not to remove religion entirely from public life or institutions. Drawing on historical context, including Thomas Jefferson’s famous letter to the Danbury Baptists, the lecture explains how the phrase “wall of separation between church and state” originated and was intended to protect the church from government encroachment, rather than exclude religion from public spaces.
