In this powerful opening to the Advent series, He Emptied Himself for Our Sake – Part 1: Kenosis, Fr. Paul unpacks the heart of Christianity through the mystery of Christ’s self-emptying love. Drawing from Philippians 2, the Church Fathers, and lived experience, this talk explores how the eternal God chose not only to become man, but to descend to the very lowest depths of human existence out of love for each one of us personally. Kenosis is not weakness. It is divine power expressed through humility. Christ entered the womb as a fetus, embraced poverty, rejection, suffering, and even descended into Hades, all so that no human experience would ever be beyond His reach. This self-emptying reveals the true nature of God and sets the pattern for the Christian life. The talk challenges us to confront the ego, abandon pride, and follow Christ downwards through repentance, silence, obedience, fasting, forgiveness, and humility. True transformation and true glory come not by lifting ourselves up, but by emptying ourselves so that the uncreated light of God may dwell in us. Kenosis is not just theology. It is the path to healing, freedom, and becoming fully human in Christ.
