Most parents—and far too many educators—don’t fully understand what the “Continuum of Special Education Services” actually means. And that’s a problem.

In this episode of Special Education Boss®, Karen Mayer Cunningham breaks down one of the most misunderstood components of IDEA: the continuum of placements and how it connects to your child’s right to FAPE in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE).

From general education with accommodations, to resource classes, self-contained programs, out-of-district placements, and even homebound instruction—Karen walks you through five key “buckets” of service delivery. She shares real talk, practical examples, and the truth about how these options should be considered—not just based on funding or staffing convenience.

Topics include:

  • Why LRE is not a place—it’s a consideration
  • How to ensure your child’s IEP goals are being implemented by the right people
  • What to ask at your next IEP meeting (“Who is the second teacher?”)
  • What happens when schools say, “We got rid of Resource”?
  • Understanding your child’s unique circumstances and cognitive profile
  • When and why out-of-district placement or homebound may be appropriate
  • The difference between ethical persuasion and pressure in IEP teams
  • Why the Continuum must be individualized—not one-size-fits-all

If you’ve ever felt pressured by a district to accept a placement that doesn’t feel right—or you’ve been told your child “won’t get a diploma” if they’re in special education—you need this episode.
