This week’s personal finance tip is about managing your wine. A personal finance tip on wine you say? Absolutely! How often have you opened a bottle and two days later it begins to taste like vinegar? This has to do with oxidation and then your pouring it down the drain. To find wines that are made with purpose for a value play, you have to spend between $15 - $25. So what can we do to get more out of our bottles? Store your wine on its side or upside down - it keeps the cork wet and protects against oxygen. Store wine in a damp cellar or an area that is dark with 60-80% humidity to prevent evaporation. For whites keep the temperature at 45-50 degrees and if storing red and white 55 degrees will do the trick. After opening, you can commonly achieve 3-5 days from your bottles after opening. If you breach this period, the flavors will dissipate; however, they can be used for cooking. The bottom line is that regular drinkers can easily spend between $100 - $200 each month and as it takes little effort to knock a bottle out with two people in one sitting. However, when we’re feeling good, the second bottle gets cracked and then it often goes to waste. Hence, follow the rules and you'll be in good shape And then you can turn up the Marvin Gaye and put the lights on low with a fresh glass of vino.
